Aviemore Whisky, Beers and Local Produce

Aviemore's and the Cairngorms' local distilleries are world famous. Along with our own Cairngorm Brewery, which produces ales such as Wild Cat and Nessie, you can find everything from organic beef and venison, to fish, lamb and game! The Aviemore area also grows a huge variety of fruit and vegetables, such as the famous Alvie Strawberries. There is a regular Farmers' Market in villages across the Cairngorms National Park.

The distillery at Dalwhinnie just south of Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park produces one of the world's finest malt whiskies. It's likely that cattle drovers founded an illegal still here in the 1700s to fortify them on the long journey south to the markets at Crieff and Falkirk. Today, the 'Gentle Spirit of the Glen' comes from one of the highest distilleries in the UK and is a full-bodied, wonderfully smooth and warming malt. This is one of the best distilleries in the park to tour.

The Cairngorm Brewery Company, established in 2001, is situated in the village of Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland. They brew traditional ales with a fresh new edge, using well-established brewing methods, the finest malted and roast barley, hops and crystal clear mountain water. Most of the local pubs stock their produce.

Drumguish distillery in Insh near Kincraig just south of Aviemore was established in 1895 but closed in 1911, and it wasn't until whisky enthusiast George Christie decided to build a new distillery in 1962 that it was revived. Work wasn't completed until 1987 however, and it took another three years for the first distillation using water from the River Tromie. The distillery now bottles Drumguish and Speyside 12-year-old. Sadly this distillery does not open its doors to the public.

Glenlivet, originally distilled illegally by whisky smugglers using the icy waters of the smooth-flowing River Livet in a wild and isolated glen in the hills of Cromdale, has survived as an unhurried, smooth single malt. George Smith recognised its potential and built a distillery ten miles north of Tomintoul close to Josie's Well, a natural cold spring bubbling from the dark, peaty earth. Sites of illicit whisky stills can still be seen in the Glenlivet area.

Stag's Breath Liqueur is a sweet alcoholic liqueur brewed in Newtonmore. It has a distinctive honey taste, which is its principal ingredient. Carefully blended on a base of heart-warming Speyside whiskies, the Stag's Breath is truly a unique taste experience. Most local stores stock this drink so why not buy some and present it to grateful friends and family?

Farmers from across the Cairngorms have worked hard over the last few years to make the Cairngorms Farmers' Market a household name. Working closely with rural crafts and other food producers, farmers have brought their fresh, local produce into the Cairngorms Park villages to offer consumers an alternative shopping experience.
